The Seshat is part of the Faces of the Earth collection, inspired by the ceremonial masks of the Sukuma people of Tanzania, who represent one half of ANYANGO’s heritage. Rooted in storytelling, protection, and ancestral presence, the masks serve as a point of departure for the spirit and symbolism of each piece.

Named after Seshat, the ancient Egyptian goddess of writing, record keeping, measurement, architecture, mathematics, and the preservation of knowledge, this piece draws from a story of memory, structure, and creation. Her name is often translated as “She Who Is a Scribe” or “She Who Writes.”

Regarded as the divine keeper of records, Seshat was also associated with the sacred “stretching of the cord” ceremony, in which the foundations of temples were measured and aligned. The Seshat translates this ancient relationship between measurement and creation into a sculptural form, where proportion, structure, and intention converge.

Handcrafted from natural raffia and embroidered with imagery translated directly from ANYANGO's original paintings, every bag is created by hand and no two are ever exactly alike. Variations in the weave, embroidery, and finish are celebrated as part of each bag's unique character.
